PipelineSync field guide

The practical framework

Attribution becomes useful when it answers a business question clearly: which programs create demand, which ones accelerate opportunities, and which investments produce revenue? The goal is not to find one perfect model. It is to make the assumptions visible and the decisions repeatable.

Start with a shared revenue definition

Marketing, sales, and finance often use different meanings for “influenced,” “sourced,” and “pipeline.” Define the objects, dates, stages, and revenue events that will anchor the reporting model.

  • Define what counts as a qualified opportunity and closed-won revenue.
  • Choose the date logic for sourced and influenced reporting.
  • Document how renewals, expansions, partner deals, and self-sourced opportunities are handled.

Use multiple views for different decisions

A first-touch view helps explain demand creation. A last-touch view shows the interaction closest to conversion. A multi-touch view helps teams understand the collection of moments that moved the deal. These views can coexist when each has a clear use.

  • Use first touch for channel and audience discovery.
  • Use pipeline-created reporting for campaign and program planning.
  • Use closed-won and payback reporting for executive investment decisions.

Make the dashboard decision-ready

A dashboard should lead to an action. Pair every metric with a question and an owner. Include coverage, velocity, conversion, win rate, average deal value, and payback, then show data quality warnings beside the numbers.

  • Separate volume metrics from efficiency metrics.
  • Show unknown or unattributed records instead of hiding them.
  • Add definitions, refresh time, and data-quality notes to every executive view.

Implementation checklist

Use this checklist to turn the framework into a working next step.

✓
Revenue definitions aligned
✓
Campaign hierarchy documented
✓
Attribution windows agreed
✓
Unknown records visible
✓

Key takeaway: Executive trust comes from transparent assumptions, not false precision. Show the model, show the gaps, and connect the output to a decision.
